During a luncheon Friday in Washington, D.C., Marine Corps wife Lakesha Cole was named the 2014 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year.

Cole was one of six finalists, including Gulfport Seabee spouse Tammy Meyer.

Even being a finalist was an accomplishment for Meyer as she emerged from a pool of more than 1,500 initial nominees. Meyer earned the title 2014 Navy Spouse of the Year, which qualified her for the ultimate title of Military Spouse of the Year.

We did an article on Meyer back in February when she was one of the final 18.

"To be in this position I feel a bit like a fish out of water," she said in February. "It's an unfamiliar position with the focus, but at the same time I appreciate it's a big responsibility and I don't take it lightly."
