Pascagoula students wash cars to get to national competition

While driving up Market Street on a recent sunny Saturday, I happened across some local students holding signs advertising a car wash. Because my car needed washing, I turned into the Pascagoula High School gym parking lot where, as I sat in line behind a van and a truck, a student came to my window and told me it was a fundraiser for the PHS speech and debate team to send 13 of its members to national competition in Philadelphia, Pa.

As a couple of dozen students swarmed to soak, soap, rinse and towel dry the four cars now pulled up for a wash, I got a little more information about the competition.

This is the fourth year the Pascagoula speech and debate team has qualified students for the National Catholic Forensic League Championship Tournament, which is May 24-28.

The team has been fundraising since January, but some students are still trying to get together the funds to make the trip.

The students did a thorough job hosing down and scrubbing my vehicle, then rinsing and drying it. I was happy to make a donation, and hope they'll get the funds they need to make the trip.
