Day 1: The first step is admitting you have a problem

The realization

For people in their 20's, 'Mean Girls' is a generational cult classic. It's not uncommon to hear young adults quoting many of the film's quirky, sassy lines in general conversation.

Wednesday, Oct. 3, is National 'Mean Girls' Day. While I was in the office, the first thing I could think of was my favorite phrase from the movie, "I really wanna lose 3 pounds." Evil teen-in-charge Regina George says this when explaining her reasoning behind dieting.

When I got on the scale this morning, I thought back to my favorite film as I stepped on the scale. When I looked down past my toes, I swallowed hard. I needed to lose more than three pounds.

278. 278. 278 pounds. That's three Lindsay Lohans. I knew that this morning, in honor of 'Mean Girls,' it was time start a new, healthy lifestyle.

The wake-up call

I would never consider myself obese. I'm a happy, healthy, active 6' 3" man. I don't sit around on the couch all day and stuff my face with sweets while watching marathons of 'The Voice.' Well, that's only on Mondays.

However, I do have a food addiction. If there's pizza in 100-feet radius, I will find it. I can never pass up a delicious sandwich either. I've found myself going to Taco Bell or McDonald's after eating dinner just to get a late-night snack. My pantry at home is filled with snack cakes, granola bars and macaroni-and-cheese dinners.

Health problems due to obesity run in my family. Many of my close family members suffer from high blood pressure and heart problems. If not for anything else, I need to get healthy for my family and for myself.

The plan

Today is the day. When I leave the office around 6 p.m., I'm going straight home to throw out any and all junk food in my pantry. Thus, I'm probably going to be throwing away lots of groceries. Tomorrow, my grocery cart will be filled with fruits, vegetables, lean meats, good proteins and lots of bottles of drinking water.

I'm not doing an internet diet. I'm not following a strict meal routine. I'm not giving up solids and drinking smoothies. So, what kind of diet am I on? I'm on a lifestyle diet. Out with fried foods, junk and soda. In with organic items, fresh fruit, and steamed vegetables. I'll replace white bread with whole-wheat wraps. No more fast food. No more diet sodas, even. If I'm going to maintain a healthy lifestyle, I'm going to do it right.

I'm going to record the presidential election on my DVR so I can take a walk around the neighborhood and scope out a path that I can walk and run every morning. Tonight, I will also commit to a gym membership.

I'm ready to have one of those "hot bodies" that people swoon over. I'm also ready to drop waist sizes and shirt sizes. Most importantly, I want to wake up in the morning and feel alive, awake and healthy.

It's go time.
