Sam’s Ocean Basket a welcome addition to Biloxi

When you get within a mile or so of Keesler’s Gate 7 on Pass Road, your dining options suddenly multiply.

You will find places serving Japanese, Korean, Greek, Mexican and Italian, a New York–style deli, and several fast-food chains.

Among the choices is Sam’s Ocean Basket, just a few blocks from the base, so you know this place is popular with the Air Force students and staff, but it also is a short hop from U.S. 90.

Sam’s original location is in Hattiesburg, just across the street from Forrest General Hospital.

Sam’s menu is simple. The basic categories are sandwiches, seafood, chicken, salads and sides. And almost everything on the menu is fried or grilled.

The sandwich menu offers six po-boys ($7.99 to $9.99) and two burgers (a single $6.99 and a double for $7.99).

Two interesting menu items are the gyro wrap ($8.99) and the lamb wrap ($8.99). If you have never had a gyro, then you are in for a real treat. It is Greek in origin and made from a combination of pork, chicken, beef, veal, lamb or mutton, all in a grilled cylindrical form.

Perhaps the best part of a good gyro is the tzatziki sauce, a mix of yogurt, cucumbers, garlic, olive oil and vinegar. Combine the thin slices of meat, the tzatziki sauce garnished with cucumber, tomato and onion, then serve on pita bread and you have a world-class sandwich.

Everything on the seafood menu is also fried or grilled: Fish, shrimp and oysters. Prices vary from a four-piece fish plate for $9.99 to a combo plate for $19.99. The frying technique Sam’s uses is good, and all the food is cooked to order, so the meal you get at Sam’s will be right off the grill or out of the deep fryer, crisp and fresh.

The chicken menu follows the same pattern and has wings and chicken strips, but also livers and gizzards. Prices vary from $5.99 for three wings and a side (the wings were great), to $8.99 for 10 wings and a side.

The appetizer menu has seven offerings, including hummus and fried pickles. You also might want to check out the desserts, and my suggestion is to go for the baklava for just $1.99.
