Free is good. Free from The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint is even better.
To celebrate 15 years of business, The Shed is serving up free barbecue and other goodies Saturday at their Ocean Springs restaurant, at 7501 Mississippi 57, according to a release from The Shed.
The star performer of the event, which is open to the public, is a Mississippi-raised, heritage whole hog, with backup provided by 500 pounds of boiled shrimp and 15-cent beer. The hog will be cooked by the Shed’s Memphis in May World Grand Championship team.
The celebration begins at noon Saturday and continues as long as the food holds out. New Orleans zydeco band the Big Easy Playboys will perform at 1 p.m., bringing their blend of Cajun with bluesy roots rock to the stage.
Siblings Brad “HeadShedHed” Orrison and Brooke “CFO Sista” Lewis, 24 and 19 at the time, opened The Shed in 2001 with a bare-bones budget, a winning recipe and a habit of Dumpster diving. Brother Brett Orrison, The Shed’s entertainment director, brings the blues to hang out with the barbecue at the restaurant which has garnered several awards. They include more than 20 for sauces at the National BBQ Association Convention plus the Grand World Championship in the Whole Hog division at Memphis in May, according to The Shed’s website.
