Catfish and seafood restaurant announces opening in iconic Gulfport location
The owners of a closed seafood buffet in Perkinston have announced plans to bring new life to the former home of Catfish Charlie in Gulfport.
Catfish Cuevas, a Southern-style seafood restaurant, will open in the building that once housed the iconic Coast restaurant. The new eatery from the owners who formerly operated Llyod’s Cabin, will revive a decades-long culinary legacy in the building that closed in April.
The new owners have not announced an opening date, but said renovations are underway.
“While the process is taking a bit longer than we originally anticipated, we want to make sure everything is just right for opening day. We’re putting our hearts into making this a place our community can enjoy for years to come,” the owners said in a Facebook post.
The owners said the new restaurant won’t be buffet-style, but guests can expect all-you-can-eat catfish and whole catfish made with an original recipe.
The building, built by the Dedeaux Clan, sits adjacent to the rocking chair that holds claim to the largest in the world.
Remembered by many for its crispy fried catfish, coleslaw and buttermilk biscuits, Catfish Charlie boasts a Coast history that may soon be revitalized under a new brand.
“We are incredibly grateful for each and every person who has supported us along the way. Your love, loyalty, and encouragement have meant more than words could ever express, and we pray that you will continue to support us in this next chapter,” the owners said.
