Even before opening his new restaurant in downtown Gulfport, Robert St. John announced Monday he’s bringing a second restaurant to South Mississippi.

Nine years in, and we’re just getting started,” the Hattiesburg restaurateur posted on Facebook. “Ed’s Burger Joint is heading to the Coast.”

St, John just returned from weeks of leading travel groups across Europe and is preparing for Ed’s Burger Joint in South Mississippi to be his 27th restaurant opening.

“We’re not saying where just yet, but I’ll tell you this. It’s going to be the most unique, most exciting one we’ve ever done,” he said.

Ed’s Burger Joint in Hattiesburg prepares fresh, never-frozen beef, and serves them on buns that are baked daily down the street at sister restaurant, Loblolly Bakery, in Hattiesburg.

More than a dozen varieties of burgers are on the menu, such as ‘shroom burger with Swiss cheese and mushrooms and the more unusual black bean burger. A big list of sandwiches, salads, hot dogs, shakes and root beer floats also will be available.

St. John and his New South Restaurant Group are putting the finishing touches on The Downtowner restaurant at the former Triplett-Day drug store and restaurant at 2429 14th St. It’s targeted to open this spring and will be filled with historic Gulfport photos and memorabilia.
