Reviewing the food at an unbelievable hidden South Mississippi taco shop

Situated one mile from Interstate 10 and 2.5 miles from a noisy section of Highway 49 is a small Mexican taco house that may be among the best Mississippi Coast eateries you have never heard of.

Morritas Taqueria opened last October on a quiet gravel lot at the corner of Canal and Landon roads in Gulfport. Those familiar with western Harrison County know the building as the former home to Snak Shak.

The building is now dressed in bright colors to reflect a vibrant menu that affords visitors the chance to find value, customize their meal and/or seek out something unique.

The three-page docket covers $12 lunchtime specials, breakfast burritos, burgers and tortas, loaded fries, street tacos, flautas and plenty more.

Inescapable from my eyes was the hot dog. A standalone item that would be out of place on the menus of most South of the Border restaurants. But this American classic gets a Mexican twist here.

It comes wrapped in bacon and covered in grilled onions. Normal enough, so far. Then it’s generously doused in guacamole, pico de gallo and jalapeños and drizzled in ketchup and mayo and laid down on a bed of toasted cheese.

If you think you’ve crossed every dog off the list on the Coast, you’ve got at least one more to try.

Birria tacos have rapidly become a staple meal in the area, as well, and the entry from Morritas Taqueria is well worth the addition to any taco rotation.

A commonality with each meal here are the serving sizes. Everything comes in a styrofoam box, and it is the mission of your cooks to stuff them full.

Most meals hover around $12 with a number of a la carte and add-on options. Morritas Taqueria is a drive-up and pick-up restaurant where orders can be placed on site or ahead of time by calling 228-254-3036.

Their Facebook page is constantly updated with specials like Taco Tuesday where American Tacos can be bought for $2 each with a purchase of at least three.
