A new sushi restaurant will open soon where another recently closed in South Mississippi.

Mizu Sushi, Hibachi and Steak House on U.S. 49 in Gulfport is expanding to open another location at 803 Bienville Blvd. in Ocean Springs. The building formerly was Chef Scott’s Asian Cuisine, which closed in February when owner Scott Khong became too ill to continue operating it.

The Gulfport location of Mizu on U.S. 49 in Orange Grove is known for all-you-can-eat sushi and hibachi meals. The Ocean Springs location will feature fine dining, said Michael Simmons, who has worked at Mizu for about 14 years.

Mizu owner/chef Zheng Lin has more than 40 years of experience preparing hibachi and Asian cuisine, Simmons said, and now his two sons work with him in the business.

The Ocean Springs restaurant will have about 10 hibachi grills and a full bar, he said. Renovations are under way, he said, and they hope to open sometime in April.

The Gulfport location focuses on sushi and hibachi made with fresh ingredients and offered at a value price, he said.

The menu in Gulfport has some unexpected choices like seaweed, squid or snow crab avocado salads. Among the sushi rolls are California roll, a Philadelphia roll with smoked salmon, avocado and cream cheese, along with spicy rolls made with shrimp, crawfish or crab.

Their filet mignon roll is something different, with snow crab and avocado topped with seared filet mignon, and their LSU and po’boy rolls deliver Southern flavor. Fried rice, noodle dishes, teriyaki, tempura and hibachi also round out the menu in Gulfport, topped with a variety of sauces.

The menu for Ocean Springs is still being finalized, he said.
