A new restaurant billed as “home of The Big Italian” is open and making fans with its hoagie-style Italian sandwiches and their own meatballs and lasagna.

The lasagna at Manetti’s Italian restaurant is made with beef, pork and a three-cheese blend and comes hot out of the oven on Fridays only.

The “ooey goey cheesy” garlic bread is served all the time.

“It’s so good I came to get more,” a customer said after trying the garlic bread.

The restaurant at 2803 Market St. has a couple of tables for two and a few more for larger groups. Takeout is available and they cater, supplying sandwiches and pasta for Mardi Gras events, tailgating and even a local school lunch on Mondays, said owner Lori Stuart.

Her menu is one side sandwiches, and already one of the favorites is The Big Italian, layered with pepperoni, salami, ham, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion and banana pepper and dressed with herbs, oil and vinegar.

Even more popular are the sandwiches made with the restaurant’s own meatballs. “I roll them every day at 8 a.m.,” she said.

Among the other choices are Italian sausage with their signature marinara sauce, spicy chicken Parmesan and a pizza sub.

“Usually it’s all lasagna on Friday,” Stuart said, although this Friday during Lent had specials of spaghetti marinara or a New York deli-style tuna sandwich with a pickle.

Their meatballs and sausage also come in entrée portions, along with spaghetti and meatballs and spicy chicken Parmesan pasta.

Prices start at $6 for sandwiches, and most entrées are priced at $11.

There’s not a separate children’s menu, but for young customers who don’t want meatballs or spaghetti, she will make them a grilled cheese sandwich. She’s also known to fulfill requests for a special dish not on the menu.

Manetti’s is open from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and is closed Sunday and Monday. To order, call 228-938-7312.
