It’s been crowned the best food truck on the Coast by Sun Herald readers, and now Salty Jax Seafood Co.has a permanent location in South Mississippi.

“For those of you who have always wanted a place to sit and mingle while enjoying a delicious lobster roll, your time has come,” Salty Jax owners Ngoc Nguyen and Lu Duong posted on Facebook before they opened. The restaurant is just inside Crave Food Hall at OS 1515 on Government Street in downtown Ocean Springs.

They opened Thursday, Feb. 12, and in just three days had already sold over 100 pounds of lobster, the company, said, not including crab, crawfish or red shrimp. Their lobster bisque and New England clam chowder sold out each of the opening days.

The new restaurant will be open daily, once they fulfill prior obligations. They are closed Monday, Feb. 16 and Thursday, Feb. 19, before resuming normal business hours on Friday for lunch and dinner, just in time for Lent.

“They’ve got a huge following,” said Todd Reilly, operations manager at OS 1515, and he says customers are eager for a spot to get a lobster roll any day of the week.

What’s special about Salty Jax?

Lobster rolls are a delicacy not often found on menus in South Mississippi and Salty Jax gives them a twist by also serving them Southern style.

The seafood roll menu is stuffed with choices. Connecticut lobster rolls come with warm butter. Maine Lobster rolls are tossed in mayonnaise and served chilled, as they are at restaurants in the northern areas of New England.

In addition, a Maryland roll made with lump crabmeat and a bayou roll served warm with crawfish and Cajun garlic butter are available for those who prefer staying with their Southern roots.

Substitute shrimp for lobster and the reds can be served Cajun, Connecticut or Maine style.

The other half of the food truck menu is stuffed with bang bang or Baja tacos, sandwiches and platters. Among the choices are fish and chip, grouper or crawfish tail baskets or soft shell crab sandwich, along with lobster or crab queso fries.

Expanding Crave culinary journeys

Bringing Salty Jax to Crave Food Hall gives customers still more opportunity to try food from other regions of the globe, Reilly said.

The eight restaurants and full bar feature cuisine from El Salvador, seafood, pasta, Asian, Japanese, Filipino and Southern fare.

When the weather is nice, especially on weekends, people dine in the courtyard with its vibrant mural as a background and a playground to entertain the kids, he said.

Free parking is available in the adjacent parking lot and Crave and OS 1515.
