A second pop-up sale of king cakes made at Loblolly Bakery in Hattiesburg is Saturday, Jan. 31. They will be sold outside The Downtowner restaurant, under construction at 2429 14th St. in Gulfport, at the corner of U.S. 49.
The sale starts at 10:30 a.m., but the line likely will form earlier, despite the cold temperatures predicted.
At the last sale on Jan. 21, people were still in line when the supply of 75 cakes sold out.
“We heard your feedback from the last pop-up, and we are bringing even more this time,” management said on a Facebook post announcing the sale.
This time 200 boxes of king cakes will arrive in four flavors — Blueberry Cream Cheese, Loblolly Cream Cheese Classic, Crescent City Cinnamon and Deep South Praline.
Sales will be limited to one per person, so that everyone has a chance to buy one. That may change if the line isn’t as long because of the weather. Payment is by card only.
The first pop-up sale was in 2025, shortly after Hattiesburg restaurateur Robert St. John purchased the former Triplett-Day Drugs and lunch counter and announced his plans to create The Downtowner restaurant. It quickly sold out.
St. John created his recipe for his Loblolly Baker after he sampled 32 king cakes from bakeries in New Orleans. They now are sold at pop-ups in several areas of Mississippi and at Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi, which is a wholesaler of the cakes.
Loblolly plans to continue the pop-up sales at different areas in South Mississippi, said Andrew Stair, coordinator of logistics for Loblolly.
