Jackson County Fair is in full swing. Here’s a guide to what to eat when you go

It’s fair season in Pascagoula.

The Jackson County fair is rolling this week and will continue through the weekend. Along with the usual trucked-in stands of funnel cakes and literally any fried thing you can imagine shoved onto a stick, the fair gives visitors a chance to mingle and dine at community kitchens and along its food truck avenue.

The fair is free to enter and once in you’ll find local favorites and friendly faces. Seven churches and the Pascagoula Elk Lodge are offering full menus and forwarding the proceeds back into the community.

We stopped by to see what’s good. Here’s everything we tried.

Gumbo - Caswell Springs Methodist Church

We bear good news for gumbo enjoyers: there’s plenty of gumbo to go around at the fair. Pretty much every kitchen in the pavilion serves it. Caswell Springs offers a straightforward bowl with rice and shrimp that balances heat and hot. And there’s a difference.

Chicken and Dumplings - Collective Church

For something warm and homely, the Collective Church stand offered one of a few standalone specialties prepared by the community kitchens that will check that box. The chicken and dumplings are served with a roll and guaranteed to hold you over until the funnel cake stands open.

Double chocolate caramel brownie - Collective Church

Whatever questions you have about this, the answer to all of them is yes. The top dessert was a double dip at the Collective Stand. Stay tuned for wife’s choice.

Peanut butter pie - Safe Harbor Methodist

We did that thing where you take a bite out of each other’s food, and you’re both like “yeah, I got the right thing” and you’re both happy because you don’t have to share anymore.

Moyitos Café and Grill

The only food truck we tried and it was a big winner. I discovered a new flavor of Doritos, had the best horchata agaus frescas on that side of the Pascagoula River and devoured two tiny tacos that were served with adorable little bags of onion and cilantro.

There’s plenty more on deck. X-Factor Catering dishes out ballpark style hot dogs, J&J Foods has your fried rice and crab rangoon and Mann Kettle Corn has, well, kettle corn.

The fair runs through Sunday, Oct. 26, and is located at the Jackson County Fairgrounds off Shortcut Road.
