Sometimes a restaurant needs a change of direction to thrive, and an Ocean Springs location is hoping to capitalize with a new brand just in time for Cruisin’ The Coast.
What opened a year ago as 4-Bulls now is Farm & Flame Butcher and Restaurant at 1108 Bienville Blvd. in Ocean Springs, just east of the intersection of U.S. 90 and Washington Avenue.
“It’s not just a new name — it’s a fresh start, built on tradition and finished with fire,” owner Joseph Mason says.
He raises beef and pork on his 250-acre Mason Hills Farm at a USDA-inspected facility in Grand Bay, Alabama, just over the Mississippi line. Their meat products and those sourced from other farms are sold at Farm & Flame in Ocean Springs, along with their line of “utter butter” barbecue sauce and seasonings.
Customers can buy steaks, chops, poultry and seasonings at the shop and take it home to prepare. “Or would you like us to do it for you?” Mason asks. “Pick anything out of our case, and we will cook it for you.”
New look, new menu
The restaurant and shop were remodeled and the Farm & Flame menu tweaked during the refresh, taking what people liked in the store and putting it on the menu.
“We have several vegetarian options,” he said, along with salads and Southern favorites like smoked meat and two-sides plates featuring brisket, beef, pulled pork, spare ribs, chicken and turkey. Their sweet potato casserole with pecans and other sides also lean Southern.
“From hand-cut ribeyes and flame-finished burgers to creamy smoked mac and cheese, we’ve got something for every kind of appetite,” their new website says.
Dinner can start with a slider trio or sausage sampler appetizer and end with key lime cake or cobbler for dessert. Beer and wine are available, and the restaurant is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Food and fun for a cause
Also part of the reimagined restaurant is a new nonprofit Farmers in Action, dedicated to helping provide communities with food, education and disaster response, Mason said.
A percentage of all sales at Farm & Flame go to help support this organization, he said. The Smoke On The Farm barbecue competition and SCA cook on Oct.17 also will raise money.
The event is at the farm and in addition to the food, will have live bull riding, music, vendor market and car show.
