Coast coffee shop under new ownership and getting rave reviews. Here’s why

The Pass Christian coffee stop at the corner of Henderson Street and North Street has a new look.

Formerly known as The Kraken Co. Company, the establishment has come under the new ownership of Nikki Ingram this year and rebranded as one of two new Runneth Over locations.

Runneth Over is a Louisiana-originated coffee shop that began in Houma three years ago. Ingram expanded her business to Mississippi now that her family lives in The Pass and is opening another location in her hometown Eclectic, Alabama.

The reborn coffee house has undergone change both in aesthetic and flavor. Its new life began in August and local reviews are through the roof.

While much of the menu will be familiar to patrons of the previous iteration of the building, Runneth Over has put its own twist on things.

This is our look at the revamped cafe.

Here’s what’s new at Runneth Over

The vibe, for one. The building has updated from its beachy turquoise look to jet black. Directly juxtaposed is the new tri-colored surfboard sign above the porch.

The bright-colored beach chairs remain, and the tables are a fresh sky blue, providing starkly contrasting pop against the building.

But what about the coffee?

Runneth Over uses a different base than its previous occupant, opting instead to use Community Coffee. Employees say the early returns have been very positive.

There’s also the new big board of flavors with over two dozen options for your signature iced latte — or in this case, my signature iced latte.

Many of these are crafted through combinations of several flavors. You can also combine these combinations. Mine was a mix of two simple flavors: toasted marshmallow and snickers (which is salted caramel syrup). As a non-coffee drinker, I enjoyed this very much.

A popular and complex blend among customers is the funnel cake, made with cupcake, salted caramel, mocha and vanilla syrup.

The s’mores blend involves more than just syrup, but also adds graham crackers and marshmallows.

Runneth Over offers similar breakfast and snack items like the muffin tops and cake pops. Seasonally new, though, is the pumpkin loaf pound cake. That can be paired with their new pumpkin caramel shaken espresso, too.

The real draw, at least to me, is not what there is to consume but how it is consumed. There are at least three unique ways to walk away with your daily hit of caffeine.

They sell their lattes in bottles, allowing you to load up and save some drive time. But better than the bottles are the buckets. They sell out quick. The buckets come with a sturdy lid, a handle and a straw. If the large isn’t enough for you, the bucket is your answer.

Runneth Over proves it’s on the cutting edge of coffee containment innovation with the soon-to-debut dual cups. It’s one cup, but divided between two half containers under the same lid. Each has its own straw.

This is perfect for anyone struggling to choose between caramel cheesecake coffee and pistachio cream.

You can still get snowballs and lotus energy refreshers, and the breakfast menu will feature both old and new items.

Runneth Over is located at 401 Henderson Avenue and open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
