3 South Mississippi restaurants fail their inspection — one twice in nine days
Three Coast kitchens failed to pass the standards of the Mississippi Health Department and failed their inspections — during the last two weeks.
One restaurant that was able to correct most of the violations found during its first inspection was cited again when the inspector returned five days later and found some of the same issues.
Ice Box of Lorraine at 10166 Lorraine Road, Gulfport, a Krispy Krunchy chicken location, had a scheduled inspection on May 13.
It was cited for: No certified manager.
Seven violations were corrected during the inspection:
▪ Proper eating, tasting, drinking or tobacco use
▪ Adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible
▪ Food separated and protected
▪ Food contact surface cleaned and sanitized
▪ Proper cooling time and temperatures
▪ Proper hot holding temperatures
▪ Time as public health control procedures and records
The facility scored another C inspection when the inspector returned May 21 for a corrective follow-up inspection. The facility was cited for three of the violations that were corrected during the prior inspection:
▪ Adequate hand washing facilities not supplied and accessible
▪ Improper hot holding temperatures
▪ Incorrect time as public health control procedures and records
Corrected during the follow-up inspection were:
▪ Certified manager
▪ Last inspection grade posted
It was reinspected May 29 and scored a B when all violations were corrected.
The only other inspection for the facility was an A in October.
Restaurants and kitchens in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the health department inspection, “B” if all violations are corrected during the inspection and “C” if the violations are critical.
Staigle’s Steakhouse, 154 East Pine Ave., Wiggins, had a scheduled inspection May 9.
It was cited for:
▪ Improper eating, tasting, drinking or tobacco use, a repeat violation
▪ Food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized, a repeat violation
▪ Consumer advisory not provided for raw or undercooked foods
This is the first C dating back to 2023.
A corrective follow-up inspection on May 16 showed all violations were corrected and the restaurant scored a B grade.
Rouses Market deli at 1444 E. Pass Road, Gulfport, was inspected May 21 for a permit renewal. It was cited for:
▪ No certified manager
▪ Improper hot holding temperatures, a repeat violation
▪ Last inspection grade not posted
Corrected during the inspection were:
▪ Proper cold holding temperatures
▪ Proper date marking and disposition
▪ Food contact surface cleaned and sanitized
This was the first C dating back to 2019.
A follow-up inspection on May 29 showed all violations were corrected and the kitchen scored a B.
Since May 8, Mississippi Health Department reports 209 restaurants and kitchens in South Mississippi passed their inspection with an A and 22 with a B.
The health inspection grade must be displayed in all restaurants, in kitchens such as school cafeterias, day care centers, and cafes and bars where food is sold.
