Food truck, restaurants, store among South MS kitchens to fail health inspection

It’s rare that a food truck fails a health inspection in South Mississippi, yet it happened this week, along with a convenience store getting a C for having bugs, rodents or animals present.

These are the Coast kitchens cited by the Mississippi Health Department inspectors since April 3:

Cousins Food Mart, 24281 Mississippi 53, Saucier, was inspected April 10 for a permit renewal. The convenience store was cited for:

Insects, rodents or animals present

Food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized

Last inspection report not posted

Corrected during the inspection were:

Adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

Certified manager

Toxic substance properly identified, stored and used

This is the third C at the food mart since 2022.

Pupuseria Los Reyes (mobile unit), 2114 Ingalls Ave., Pascagoula, was inspected April 14 for a permit renewal.

The food truck was cited for:

No certified manager

Improper cold holding temperatures

The only other inspection was an A in April 2024.

Big Ben’s Bar-B-Q and More at Edgewater Mall, 2600 Beach Blvd., Biloxi, had a scheduled inspection April 14. It was cited for:

Inadequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

Hot and cold water not available at adequate pressure

Plumbing not installed with proper backflow devices

Corrected during the inspection was:

Proper reheating procedure for hot holding

The prior inspections in 2023 and 2024 were As.

El Saltillo Bar at Edgewater Village, 2650 Beach Blvd. Biloxi, was inspected April 14 for a permit renewal. It was cited for:

Inadequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

Plumbing not installed with proper backflow devices

This is the third C since 2018, with the prior Cs in 2022 and 2024.

Restaurants and kitchens in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the health department inspection, “B” if all violations are corrected during the inspection and “C” if the violations are critical.

Most restaurants in South Mississippi pass without any violations. Since April 3, the health department gave 129 As to restaurants in South Mississippi that scored an A and 15 a B.
