First Vicious Biscuit in MS is thriving. Is it worth the drive ... and the wait?

A South Carolina creation has officially arrived in Mississippi.

Vicious Biscuit has been expanding from Charleston across the Southeast and has now taken up residence on Hardy Street in Hattiesburg, thanks to local franchise partners Cliff and Hunter Russum.

The brothers are owners of three Mugshots locations in Mississippi and have expanded their portfolio to bring a unique fast-casual brunch experience to the area. The Hattiesburg location is the first to open, with plans for another in Jackson.

Vicious Biscuit is the product of Ole Miss alum George McLaughlin, who brought 18 of Oxford’s McAllister’s Deli locations to South Carolina. He’s completing the restaurant trade by bringing his bold, and rapidly-growing, biscuit experience to Mississippi.

The restaurant takes the traditional biscuits and gravy breakfast and puts a big twist on it. The result is a line that has stretched outside the front door since the establishment opened and garnered a perfect 5.0 stars over a whopping 400-plus reviews on Google.

We were in the area for the Southern Miss football spring game and thought we’d investigate to determine if it’s worth the drive from the Coast.

Vibe — 4 out of 5

The sound of 20th-century pop music bounces over the vibrant dining room decorated with 50s marquee-style neon signs and reminders to stay vicious.

It’s a fast-casual feel that has you order at the counter before finding a seat at a table, booth or the bar.

Speaking of bars, this may be the first building you walk into with a jam bar, a self-serve bar with 10 different jams, jellies and butters.

The company’s skull-and-dough logo is everywhere, including on the merch sold by the counter (I’m partial to the Body by Biscuit shirt).

Food — 4.5 out of 5

The menu can be overwhelming at first, the good news is there’s plenty of time to study while in line.

You’re going to have to choose between a number of attention-grabbers. Will it be the shrimp & grits biscuit? Or the ham-and-pork stuffed Holy City Cubano? There’s also the crab cake, egg and fried green tomato-filled Crab Benny biscuit.

With so many options on the table I went with the signature biscuit, The Vicious. Let’s break it down: a big chunk of chicken dressed in maple sausage gravy and cowboy candy with a drizzle of syrup. All this stuffed between a jalepeno cheddar biscuit.

Let me start by saying I’ve never been a huge biscuit and gravy person. The only variation I consistently enjoyed and craved was my grandmother’s with chocolate gravy. If you are not from Arkansas that last part may sound strange to you.

But if Vicious Biscuit sold its maple sausage gravy by the bucket, I would be out of money. It is that good. The chicken breast is a bigger-than-Chick-fil-a portion and pairs well with the sweet syrup.

The cowboy candy (jalepenos) adds a light kick and the biscuit itself is flavorful and fluffy and great with a slather of honey butter.

Is it worth the drive? Yes, yes it is. Is it worth the wait? Also yes. From line arrival to end of meal was about 90 minutes.

Value — 4 out of 5

The Vicious was $12 and delicious. It also filled me. This is acceptable. Three entrees with a special drink (don’t tell anyone) was under $50. This was also acceptable.

And there’s a lot more than just biscuits. Appetizers include deep-fried sweet potato fritters with white chocolate custard and cream-cheese filled beignets. If you don’t want to be rolled out of the building stuffed with biscuits, there’s also keto bowls and omelets.

Vicious Biscuit offers everything with a gluten-free substitute, as well.

The service is highly attentive and swift. Tables are cleaned and cleared by servers, managers and owners alike.

Hattiesburg is a food haven and a hub for quality eating. Add Vicious Biscuit to the list.
