A 5-star meal: Folks are raving about MS Coast’s new ‘50s-style diner, and now I know why
There’s a new burger in town.
Loyalists to the Honey Hole and the local Ward’s have been put to the test with the opening of Luckies Diner in Vancleave.
The ‘50s-style diner is the newest addition on MS 57 through the main part of town next to Vancleave High School. It’s a family-owned burger joint that has drawn the approval of Jackson County residents north of I-10.
It’s named for the owners’ prize bull on their cattle farm and serves as a work haven for local students who have few employment opportunities in the area.
Luckies just opened earlier this month, but the praise the family-first feel and traditional burger meals have received are plenty to pull us out for a taste-test.
Vibe — 4 out of 5
The smell of the grill hits you before you even park the car. The black-and-white checkered sign and red Coca-Cola umbrellas pull you in and set the scene for your experience at the tin-roofed joint.
There’s an expansive covered outdoor seating area with windowed access to the kitchen. String lights stretch across the ceiling and bar seating wraps around the area.
Inside is a simple dining room separated from the kitchen by a black-block wall. There’s red metal tables with matching chairs.
It’s a simple operation with a home-style feel, one that I’m familiar with from years visiting small, family-style restaurants on the empty backroads zigzagging around Troy while in college.
My only suggestion here is leaning further into the ‘50s theme. Music plays, but it’s modern country. A jukebox and that one picture of James Dean on a motorcycle would be perfect here.
Food — 5 out of 5
Remember what I said about the smell? That was not hyperbole. The Diner’s Choice Burger might as well come straight off the grill at the cookout.
The double patties featured perfect markings, the right amount of char and were American dressed with lettuce, tomato, onions, ketchup and mustard. It’s an absolute spoil for the students, lunch-breakers and late-evening gatherers.
At a time burgers are becoming fancier and more outlandish, it’s almost difficult to find a classic that really sings. You’re lucky I even got photos of it, because it was gone in such a hurry.
It paired nicely with the strawberry lemonade, but the real queen is the milkshake. Your boy is a sucker for strawberry shakes and Luckies did not disappoint. It’s thick, but smooth and topped with a cherry on its whip cream cloud.
This was delivered with a starter of onion rings. Oftentimes these are too greasy or too stringy. Not here. There’s a healthy mix of beefy and thin rings and they’re textured just right.
This is a five-of-five meal. I have no notes, Luckies.
Value — 4 out of 5
Burgers aren’t the only things on the menu. There’s specialty fries and nachos loaded with brisket from The Shed and queso, jalapenos and more. You can get chicken tenders if you’re basic or wacky wontons if you’re feeling extra.
The best value meal is Luckies chili cheese hot dog for just $6.99. The restaurant also does a low-cost breakfast. There are four entrees available for $3.99 each, including a sausage, egg and cheese wrap and a sausage gravy-topped biscuit.
The menu expands on certain days when crawfish is boiled out back. In preparation for this — and your dessert-covered children — there are built-in sinks in the outdoor dining area.
The students’ service is brisk and attentive as they prepare for life as engineers, horse vets and professional baseball players.
It’s a bit out of the way for many on the Mississippi Coast, but it’s well worth sneaking up for a taste of an old classic.
