This fruit-shaped ice cream has gone viral. Here’s where to find it in South Mississippi
These days, anything can go viral on the internet — including ice cream.
In the last year, a Chinese ice cream treat shaped like a very realistic-looking mango has become immensely popular, spurring thousands of videos and reviews on various social media sites.
The ice cream, called “Propitious Mango,” also comes in other varieties including a peach-shaped one and a lemon-shaped one. All three of the varieties can be very hard to find as they are more of a specialty item and frequently sell out due to their popularity.
Sun Herald sports reporter and food reviewer Scott Watkins and I set out to find out where we could purchase and try the viral ice cream ourselves.
To find the ice cream, we went out to Nell’s Sweets & Treats in Picayune. A community spot where kids gather after school, Nell’s — located at 901 Palestine Road — is pretty much a one-stop shop for everything. They have hard ice cream, sundaes, snow balls, coffee, cheesecake, pizza, hot dogs, the also viral Dubai chocolate, and of course the fruit shaped ice cream we were looking for.
When we went on Friday, they had the peach and mango varieties in stock for about $10 each. A day later, on their Facebook page, Nell’s posted that they also had the lemon variety and had dropped the price to $8.99.
I purchased the mango variety and Watkins purchased the peach.
The elaborate packaging with a clear top that the ice cream comes in, I discovered, is also very practical. As I removed the outer cardboard, it became apparent that the plastic part acts as a cover for your hand as you hold the hidden popsicle stick underneath, giving you the ability to bite or lick the ice cream mess-free.
“The genius in the product is the boxed design, shielding your hands from any melting,” Watkins said, agreeing with me.
I found the mango one to be very refreshing with a very strong mango flavor. The outer coating gives it a bit of crunch as you dive-in but the ice cream itself has a smooth finish without any kind of mango bits or texture.
Watkins also recommended the peach variety.
“There’s no missing the peach flavor,” he said.
Nell’s is not the only place in South Mississippi that carries the ice cream. In a Facebook post, Blazin Cajun in Gulfport said it carries it, but it often sells out. Blazin Cajun also limits the number customers can buy. In a phone call, Lee’s Supermarket in Biloxi said it will be carrying the ice cream in the coming weeks, but it isn’t currently available.
