Popular sub chain among South MS kitchens and restaurants that failed health inspections

Restaurants in South Mississippi are again being cited for not having an owner or staff member certified in food handling, a trend that started after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two of the three kitchens cited in February failed their inspection in part because they didn’t have a person who took the food certification course.

In the case of a Subway in Gulfport, inspections have been conducted every February and August since 2019, so the Feb. 12 inspection wasn’t a surprise.

The restaurants that got a C since Feb. 1 are:

Subway at 23379 Mississippi 53, Gulfport had a scheduled inspection Feb. 12.

It was cited for:

No certified manager

Improper eating, tasting, drinking or tobacco use, a repeat violation

Corrected during the inspection were:

Food contact surface cleaned and sanitized

Toxic substance properly identified, stored and used

Last inspection report posted

This is the first C dating back to 2016

Mutt & BC’s Bar to Grill (bar), 2309 East Canal St., Picayune, was inspected Feb. 7. It was cited for:

No certified manager

This is the only C dating back to 2019.

Comfort Inn and Suites, 12009 Indian River Road, D’Iberville, had a scheduled inspection Feb. 5 for a permit renewal. It was cited for:

Food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized, a repeat violation

This is the first C dating back to 2022.

Restaurants and kitchens in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the state health department inspection with no violations, “B” if all violations are corrected during the inspection and “C” if the violations are critical.

Most restaurants and kitchens in South Mississippi pass their inspection each month. Since Feb. 1:

135 restaurants in the coastal District 9 scored an A

15 scored a B
