Popular sub shop among 4 MS Coast restaurants that failed most recent health inspections

Coast restaurants are again being cited for having no certified manager trained in food safety and for unsanitary conditions.

Restaurants are required to have a food manager who takes a safety court and passes the test to become certified. The certified manager can be the owner or a staff member.

Hiring and keeping certified staff has been an issue since the coronavirus. Restaurant owners generally know when their restaurant will be inspected for a permit renewal, but don’t have certified managers in place when the inspector arrives.

These four restaurants in Harrison and Jackson scored a C and were cited for critical health violations over the past two weeks:

Orangutang’s Prop Stop, 12097 Lorraine Road, Biloxi, was inspected Jan. 28 for a permit renewal. It was cited for:

Inadequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible, a repeat violation

Toxic substance not properly identified, stored, used, a repeat violation

This is the second C dating back to 2007. The prior C was in 2008.

Torch Bar at IP Casino Resort 850 Bayview Ave., Biloxi, was inspected Jan. 28 for a permit renewal. It was cited for:

Food contact surface not clean and sanitized, a repeat violation

This is the third C since 2012. The last C was in 2023 for the same violation.

Subway at 15096 Creosote Road, Gulfport was inspected Jan. 27 for a permit renewal. It was cited for:

No certified manager

Last inspection report not posted

This was the second C since 2020, with the prior one in February 2024.

The Bayou Restaurant, 2411 Beachview Dr., Ocean Springs was inspected Jan. 17 for a permit renewal.

It was cited for:

No certified manager

Last inspection report not posted

The restaurant had As in the prior two inspections.

Restaurants and kitchens in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the health department inspection, “B” if all violations are corrected during the inspection and “C” if the violations are critical.

The health inspection grade must be displayed in all restaurants, in kitchens such as school cafeterias, day care centers, and cafes and bars where food is sold.

Since Jan. 16, Mississippi Health Department reports 99 restaurants and kitchens in South Mississippi passed their inspection with an A, 10 with a B and 4 failed with a C.
