Restaurant that brought Texas BBQ to South Mississippi is closed and headed west
Vincent Hunt opened his Texas barbecue restaurant near Pass Christian, where he grew up, and made some of the best brisket people in South Mississippi said they ever tasted.
Salt Pepper Oak at 16940 Kapalama Dr. near Pass Christian near Diamondhead closed Dec. 22 for the holidays and Hunt announced Monday afternoon it won’t reopen as scheduled in January.
“After much reflection, we’ve decided to close our Mississippi location. This decision wasn’t easy,” he said in a social media video, “as we’ve cherished every moment serving this wonderful community. Your support and loyalty have meant the world to us.”
A new opportunity has come their way, he said, and in February he hopes to open a new restaurant at 6721 Exchequer Dr. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
“We can’t wait to bring our passion for quality barbecue to the vibrant Baton Rouge community and hope to see familiar faces join us there,” he said.
The restaurant was known for its “low and slow” smoked barbecue, cooked strictly with wood. The full menu on Saturdays featured brisket, pulled pork shoulder, beef ribs and house made sausage that takes three days to prepare. On Fridays they added smash burgers and loaded baked potatoes to the menu.
Customers gave the restaurant a perfect 5 star rating on Facebook and a 4.9 on Google.
Their customers from South Mississippi posted on Facebook that they hope to visit the new location in Louisiana.
“Thank you for being part of our journey. We look forward to creating new memories with you in Baton Rouge,” Hunt said.
This is the third restaurant in South Mississippi to announce closings this week. Paninis and Boba? O Mai, and Le’s Place Asian Restaurant, both in Ocean Springs, posted on social media they are closing.
