Honduran recipes arrive on the Mississippi Coast with the opening of this new restaurant
Mexican restaurants are plentiful across South Mississippi but Honduran tacos, baleadas and beef fajitas in jalapeño sauce are a relatively new taste on the Coast.
The new La Hacienda 504 is bringing the flavor and cultural of Honduras to Biloxi for those who want to sample the Central American fare.
The restaurant is tucked away behind Iron Works Gym, north of Edgewater Mall and the railroad tracks at 220 Eisenhower Drive.
There’s plenty of seating indoors and families and groups can dine outdoors, where there are cornhole boards and other activities.
Since many of their customers are unfamiliar with Honduran dishes, owner Amin Dip had the menus written in Spanish and English and photos of some of the popular dishes, liked rolled tacos.
Taco Tuesday is a thing at this restaurant, but the tacos are something different than those served at Mexican restaurants, the staff says. Honduran tacos come in a choice of soft, crunchy, or flute tacos that are rolled, fried tacos filled and topped with meat and vegetables.
Similar to a “meat and two sides” Southern restaurant, La Hacienda 504 specializes in grilled or fried meat and a choice of two side dishes. In addition to the traditional sides — refried beans and plantain — are other selections like garden salad, coleslaw, mixed veggies, beans and rice, french fries and mashed potatoes.
For the main dish are grilled pork chops, fried chicken, beef steak and chicken or beef fajitas, served regular or kicked up with jalapeño sauce.
For a bigger variety, diners can order the mixed kebab or a mixed grill of chicken and sausage for one or two people, or four can share a mixed grill of beef, pork chop, grilled chicken and sausage.
The menu also has a variety of appetizers, like wings or anafre con quesillo, which is refried beans with melted cheese, served with crispy tortillas.
The soups also are different and filled with flavors. Sopa des res has chunks of beef, potatoes, carrots and corn on the cob, while the sopa marinera is a splurge and a treat, with crab legs, shrimp and other seafood cooked in coconut milk with a blend of spices.
The restaurant is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 9 p.m. for those who want to try this new Latin American eatery.
