Coast restaurants fail inspection for issues like fish safety, presence of bugs or rodents

Four restaurants and kitchens in South Mississippi were cited for critical violations the first week in June, one for bugs, rodents or animals present.

Dedeaux All In, 23010 Standard Dedeaux Road, Pass Christian, had a scheduled inspection June 3. It was cited for:

Food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized, a repeat offense

Insects, rodents or animals present

This was the first C dating back to 2022.

For the second week a restaurant was cited for not providing required records that show shell stock tags and parasite destruction.

This part of the inspection deals with two items that fall under the Food and Drug Administration Food Code.

Oyster tags must be kept for 90 days after the container is empty and they have to be kept in chronological order according to harvest date. This is checked at every inspection by the Mississippi Health Department.

If a restaurant sells sashimi grade fish, it must show parasite destruction letters from the seafood supplier on how the parasites are destroyed in the raw fish. This is checked every year at the permit inspection.

While regulations haven’t changed, the health department said a restaurant may have a new manager who may not be as up to date as they need to be on the regulations.

McElroy’s Harbor House, 695 Beach Blvd., Biloxi, had a scheduled inspection June 6. It was cited for: Required records available shell stock tags parasite destruction. It was reinspected June 13 and scored a B when the violation was corrected.

This is the first C dating back to 2012.

Restaurants and other food service establishments in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the health department inspection, “B” if all violations are corrected during the inspection and “C” if the violations are critical.

While some restaurants are able to correct issues during the inspection, others are cited for a critical violation for the same offense.

SAI Country Store, 12431 Mississippi 67, Biloxi, had a scheduled inspection June 7. It was cited for: Food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized. Corrected during the inspection was: Adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible.

This was the fifth C since 2013 and the third since 2019.

Ruby Tuesday and Ruby Tuesday Catering at 6736 Mississippi 63, Moss Point, was inspected June 3 for a permit. It was cited for: Improper cold holding temperatures. This is the only C dating back to 2011.

Most restaurants, kitchens and food trucks had no violations this month. For the first nine days of June, 69 restaurants, nursing homes and other kitchens in District IX in South Mississippi scored an A for no violations, and 15 a B.
