New restaurant opens at now-busy location on MS Coast. Here’s what’s on the menu
Once a quiet place in Biloxi, the corner of Porter Avenue and Division Street now is on the way to the new main entrance of Keesler Air Force Base, and an ideal location for a restaurant.
Sweet Pepper Caribbean American Restaurant opened Wednesday at 1075 Division St., the long-time location of Desporte Seafood. For those coming from the beach, it is up Porter Avenue from the Biloxi Lighthouse.
“Yes, I’m from Jamaica,” owner Orville Little says with an accent that indicates he’s a native of the Caribbean and the dishes he offers will be authentic.
Hi lived in New York for 21 years before finding his way to South Mississippi and bringing a menu of his favorite foods.
Caribbean food — mostly Jamaican — will be on the menu for dine-in at one of the booths or tables. Those driving home from Keesler, and others who want dinner already made, will be able to stop by and take out lunch or dinner.
Little said he’s also applied for a permit to deliver food to the base.
A station similar to a buffet, but with a server, will give customers who are less familiar with Caribbean food a chance to see just what they want to try.
Oxtail, curry goat, jerk chicken and curry chicken are some of the Caribbean specialties Little and his partner Steve Reid will be offering.
More familiar may be the rice and beans or pepper steak, along with sides like collard greens, baked macaroni and cheese or cabbage.
Among a dozen wing flavors are jerk or sweet chili wings for a Caribbean taste, or Buffalo wings for those who prefer the original.
“Our seafood menu is pretty much done to order,” he said. Customers can choose spicy jerk salmon or sweet chili shrimp or go more Southern-style with fried shrimp and fries or butter fried lobster.
The restaurant will be open daily from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Take out orders can be called in at 228-207-3526.
