6 South MS kitchens fail inspections, one after complaints of undercooked chicken

The Mississippi Health Department allows people to call or file an online complaint against a restaurant or kitchen, and two people who ate at a South Mississippi chicken restaurant did just that.

Church’s Chicken at 4288 Main St., Lucedale, got its first complaint on Sept. 26.

“Caller stated that she ordered a two-piece and the chicken was undercooked,” the health department website says. “Also stated that potatoes were half cooked and there is no serv-safe manager on duty.”

Another complaint was made Oct. 13 about being served raw chicken.

The restaurant was inspected Oct. 16 and was cited for:

Improper cold holding temperatures

Corrected during the inspection were:

Person in charge present who demonstrates knowledge and performs duty

Adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

Proper hot holding temperatures

Proper date marking and disposition

Other kitchens in South Mississippi that failed their restaurant inspections between Oct. 6 and Oct. 16 are:

The Reef Restaurant, 1749 Beach Blvd., Biloxi was inspected Oct 11 for a permit renewal. It was cited for not having required records available for shell stock tags parasite destruction.

Corrected during the inspection were:

Food contact surface cleaned and sanitized

Proper cold holding temperatures.

This is the second C since 2015.

Little Caesars, 4494 Popp’s Ferry Road, D’Iberville was inspected Oct. 10 for a permit renewal.

It was cited for:

No certified manager

Last inspection grade not posted

This was the only C dating back to 2015

Peterson’s Quick Stop, 30285 Mississippi 603, Perkinston, was inspected Oct. 6. It was cited for:

Food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized

Insects, rodents or animals present

Corrected during the inspection was: Hands clean and properly washed.

A follow-up inspection on Oct. 16 showed all violations were corrected and the kitchen scored a B.

This was the only C dating back to 2009.

Pit Stop Nicholson, 2001 Highway 11 South, Picayune, was inspected Oct. 12 for a permit. It was cited for:

No certified manager

Food not in good condition, safe and unadulterated

Food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized

Last inspection report not posted

Corrected during the inspection were:

Adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

Insects, rodents or animals not present

This is the second C dating back to 2010.

Stop & Go Food Mart, 1621 N. Beech St., Picayune, was inspected Oct. 9. It was cited for:

Food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized

Toxic substance not properly identified, stored, used

Insects, rodents or animals present

Corrected during the inspection was: Adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

This is the second C since 2015.

Restaurants and other food service establishments in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the health department inspection, “B” if violations are corrected during the inspection, and “C” if the violations are critical.

Since Oct. 6, there have been 88 restaurants in South Mississippi that scored an A for no violations and 15 that got a B when violations were corrected during the inspection.
