Sal & Mookie’s suddenly closes in downtown Biloxi. What’s next for the building?
Sal & Mookie’s in downtown Biloxi is closed.
The owners of the pizza restaurant that also sold Bop’s custard posted Wednesday on Facebook: “After much reflection and consideration, we have made the difficult decision to move in a different direction.”
The restaurant said the closure was effective immediately to prepare for a “sudden” transition. The Sal & Mookie’s locations in Jackson and Madison appear to remain open.
The Facebook post also said their building, just north of Biloxi Town Green and across the street from Hard Rock Casino Biloxi, won’t be empty long.
“We are also pleased to announce that a different restaurant with a new owner and name will be taking over the space,” the post said.
Sal & Mookies opened in Biloxi in the the spring of 2015 and was the first franchise outside the original location in Jackson.
Bruce Lacey, managing partner, said at that time that they chose the location next to the Town Green because they wanted to be a part of the community.
In addition to New York–style pizza and ice cream, the restaurant had a large menu and a full bar that featured local craft beers.
During the coronavirus pandemic, the restaurant changed concept a bit to a more fast-casual vibe where customers ordered at the counter. The menu was also condensed a bit to pizzas, salads, sandwiches and a few appetizers. The ground floor under the restaurant was converted to a large outdoor dining space to continue serving customers safely.
“Our adventure with Sal & Mookie’s has been a rewarding and enriching experience, and one we won’t forget,” the owners said.
