A new restaurant will bring tacos and Tex-Mex in beachfront spot that was once Hooters

A restaurant on the Biloxi Strip that’s been closed for years is getting a spicy new tenant.

What was Hooters for many years will become the fourth Mississippi Coast location of Aztecas Restaurant & Cantina.

Plans for the building at 1906 Beach Blvd. go before the Biloxi Development Review Committee Wednesday. Coast architect Johnny Olsen is scheduled to present for the restaurant owners.

The building was Wentzel’s Seafood after Hooters closed and most recently Mateo’s Tex Mex & Margaritas. It is in a prime spot on Beach Boulevard, just east of Treasure Bay Casino and west of Big Play Entertainment Center.

Brandon Wooldridge, an owner of RW Development, said his company sold the property to Azteca’s.

The family-owned restaurant chain has locations on U.S. 90 in Gautier and Ocean Springs, one on U.S. 49 in Gulfport, and three in the area around Mobile, Alabama.

This isn’t the only restaurant group that has opened restaurants in Biloxi and other cities in South Mississippi. The nearby Shaggy’s has locations in Biloxi, Gulfport and Pass Christian Harbor. Woody’s Roadside recently opened in Gulfport, adding to its restaurants in Ocean Springs and Biloxi.

Azteca’s has a large menu of dips, wings and other appetizers, along with street tacos, soups, salads, burritos, fajitas, chimichangas, enchiladas and Mexican dinner combos.
