We asked. 86,000 voted. Here’s your choice for best king cake on the Mississippi Coast.

Ah, Mardi Gras.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year on the Mississippi Coast. We push our New Year’s resolutions until Good Friday and celebrate 2023 with dancing, parades, good music, trips to Mobile and New Orleans and — most importantly — king cake.

They’re sweet, savory, stuffed with cream cheese and fruit and sometimes even topped with fresh, local seafood.

And the best kept secret is that South Mississippi has some of the top king cakes in the United States.

You helped us find the bakeries from Bay St. Louis to Biloxi to Pascagoula and beyond that have the top king cakes in our area. Then, we went on a mission to find the very best one.

The Sun Herald’s inaugural Mardi Gras bracket kicked off with 16 bakeries. Residents went to www.sunherald.com to vote for their favorites. After four rounds and more than 86,000 total votes, the Coast chose Cheeky Monkey Cake Co. in Biloxi as the winner. The runner-up in the tight race was Crazy B’s Coffee and Confections in Pascagoula.

The Sun Herald will visit Cheeky Monkey later this week to learn more about the bakery and try their king cake!
