Waveland’s best-kept secret is this quaint donut shop serving up family traditions
If you live in Bay St. Louis, Waveland, Pearlington or Lakeshore, chances are you’ve eaten a boudin kolache, apple fritter or classic glazed donut from King Donuts.
The line at King on the weekends sometimes loops around the store and outside and is just as long as the drive-thru at McDonald’s across U.S. 90.
That’s because the pastries, donuts and sandwiches at King are delicious, and the service is absolutely phenomenal. It seems as if the men and women working the counter remember every single person who walks through the doors of the salmon pink building nestled in between a seafood market and Latinx grocery store.
I’m a Hancock County native who has occasionally gone to King Donuts for years, and no matter if they hadn’t seen me in a week or a month, they know I want six donut holes for my dog and a bacon, egg and cheese croissant. Sometimes I’ll surprise them and get a blueberry cake donut, too.
King opens early for the school crowd and closes at 1 p.m., or when they sell out of goodies. When I stop in during the week, there’s almost always a crowd of Bay High students in their uniforms grabbing breakfast before the bell rings. A lot of King’s repeat school-aged customers are pictured on the wall behind the cash register.
The donut shop is open on Christmas Eve and Christmas and has become a tradition in my family. I drive up to the Kiln early Christmas morning so I can watch my now 3-year-old nephew open his gifts from Santa.
But I always stop at King before I make the trip so my nephew can have a delicious breakfast, too.
If you’re ever in Hancock County and want to treat yourself to breakfast, stop and get a little bit of everything at King Donuts. You won’t be disappointed.
