A popular Coast Mexican restaurant is closing. ‘Such an important part of our community.’

On the same day South Mississippi learned a Chipotle Mexican Grill is coming to South Mississippi, the owner of El Agave Mexican restaurant in Gulfport posted on social media that his restaurant is closed.

“It is with heavy heart that I inform you today, we have come to the difficult decision to close El Agave,” owner Mercedes Carranza said on Facebook. He posted the news around 10 a.m. Wednesday and more than 300 comments and 250 shares had amassed a few hours later.

“We are so grateful to all of you who have supported us over the last 9 years. We will miss all the wonderful people who became a part of our extended family,” he said.

The restaurant is at 2108 25th Avenue (Highway 49) near 21st Street and north of downtown.

Among the specialties of this authentic Mexican restaurant are tamales and chimichangas.

Gulfport Councilman Rusty Walker was among the first to comment on Facebook: “Hate to hear this. We will miss you and wish you everything wonderful,” he said.
