Restaurant News & Reviews

I’m a diabetic who loves pizza. These MS Coast restaurants help me stay in line.

Pizza has always been my favorite food.

My mom worked a part-time job as a Domino’s delivery driver when I was in elementary school, and she’d often bring pizza home for the family to eat.

We moved to the Kiln a few years later, and pizza became our weekly meal on Fridays. The closes Domino’s was in Diamondhead, and we’d meet the delivery driver at Dolly’s Quick Stop.

As an adult, I can still eat pizza any day of the week. And I’m not picky. Gas station pizza is great, and so the pie at the Sicilian II in Biloxi. The Sycamore House in Bay St. Louis and Sarducci’s in Gulfport have my favorite pizza on the Coast, and I often drive to the New Orleans Bywater neighborhood to get a slice and a Caesar salad at Pizza Delicious.

But I have to eat it in serious moderation. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a few years ago, and it’s admittedly been a rocky road. I’m a huge foodie and love dining out, and I’ve always had not-so-great eating habits.

But my health is more important.

The best way for me to keep my blood sugar at acceptable levels is to cut back on sugars and heavy carbohydrates.

And luckily, several pizza restaurants on the Coast have menu items that still allow me to treat myself while keeping my blood sugar in mind.

Tony’s Brick Oven Pizza in downtown Gulfport will make a pizza a bowl for you, cutting out the crust. I’ve also had a pizza bowl at Brooklyn Pizzeria in Bay St. Louis.

I had lunch at Tony’s on Thursday and got a classic pepperoni pie. The bowl had a good amount of pepperoni, melty mozzarella and red sauce.

Puff Belly’s in D’Iberville also has a keto-friendly menu where you can make any pizza into a bowl.

A pizza bowl may not be the healthiest thing to eat, but it does help you find something that won’t spike your blood sugar when you’re working, on the go, or want to enjoy pizza or Italian with your friends and family for a night out.

For me, it’s a good option to treat myself that isn’t fast food or sweets. And it’s awesome that so many spots on the Coast will make it happen if you ask.
