5 MS Coast restaurants cited for critical violations, including Japanese and pizza spots

Five restaurants in South Mississippi failed their restaurant inspections in the last 12 days of July, pushing the total to 10 kitchens that got a C for the month.

Cited for critical violations since July 20 are:

Jack Dog and Burger, 17186 Mississippi 26, Lucedale, was inspected July 28 after a complaint.

The inspector found:

  • Inadequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible
  • The report from the prior inspection was not posted.

Corrected during the inspection were hands not cleaned and properly washed and toxic substance was not properly identified, stored and used.

This was the first C dating back to 2018

Oishi Japanese Express, 1647 Pass Road, Biloxi, had a scheduled inspection on July 21 and was cited for improper cold holding temperatures, a repeat offense.

Corrected during the inspection were:

  • Food contact surface cleaned and sanitized
  • Proper eating, tasting, drinking or tobacco use
  • Adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

The restaurant had a C in January 2021.

Tony’s Brick Oven Pizza, 2417 14th St., Gulfport, had a scheduled inspection July 21 and got a C for improper cold holding temperatures.

The inspector returned the following day and the restaurant got a B when the violation was corrected.

This was the only C dating back to 2009.

Comfort Inn and Suites, 9379 Canal Road, Gulfport, was inspected July 26 for a permit. The food service was cited for:

  • No person in charge and present who demonstrates knowledge and performs duty
  • No certified manager
  • Inadequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

Prior to this, the food service has had only A ratings dating back to 2017.

Fast Mart at 5500 Gautier Vancleave Road in Gautier had a scheduled inspection on July 26 and was cited for having no certified manager.

The only other grade the kitchen received was an A in November 2021.

Restaurants and other food service establishments in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the health department inspection, “B” if violations are corrected during the inspection, and “C” if the violations are critical.

From July 20-31, health inspectors gave 116 As and 19 Bs to restaurants and kitchens in South Mississippi.
