Inflation forces Gulfport bakery to raise prices for first time in a decade, owner says

Danielle White did everything she could.

The owner of Quality Bakery in downtown Gulfport fought for months to keep prices the same on her pastries and desserts, even as the cost of to-go packaging skyrocketed and eggs nearly tripled in price.

“The week of Easter, eggs were $55.25,” White said from behind the counter of her shop that her family started 74 years ago. Now, she pays $135 for the same quantity. The boxes she uses to package goodies cost about $3 each.

White said that she could no longer afford to eat the rising costs of products during this record period of inflation in the U.S., so she finally decided this week to slightly raise her prices.

It’ll be the first price increase in about a decade, she said.

“If you notice a few cents added to your normal buy… maybe even up to one dollar, understand I didn’t do that to become rich. I did that to keep a generational business afloat!” White posted from Quality Bakery’s Facebook page.

“You all know me, you know my family, you have spent generations standing behind us!”

White said she cried as she made the post and hopes the community continues to support her business.

Quality Bakery offers a variety of pastries including doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, kolaches and petit fours. The bakery is known for its filled king cakes during Mardi Gras season.

“I will do everything in my power to keep your costs down as much as I can!” she said on Facebook.
