This Coast venue has girls night and karaoke. But the food menu is out of this world.
You have just got to love the way The Cannery Bar ‘n Grill describes itself: “A dose of hospitality, a dab of local flavor, and an earful of live music.”
There is a ton of live music, girls’ night out, karaoke and crawfish boils. And on top of all of that, they have a pretty cool menu as well. am not sure there is another place like the Cannery on the Gulf Coast.
It’s a large restaurant with dozens of tables, a long bar and two pool tables. Its dimly lit, too dark to take photos without a flash, so I walked out the back door to photograph the food we ordered in the sunlight and was surprised by a very cool outside area. Its fenced, so passing traffic isn’t a bother. It’s also graveled, so even after a spring rain, it’s still comfortable to sit. And, with all the entertainment the Cannery has, the outside stage has to be great in warm weather.
The menu isn’t huge, but it covers all the bases. There are fifteen appetizers, my favorite category, that include deep fried chicken skins, flatbread pizzas and baskets that include things like egg rolls, tater kegs, and whiskey battered onion rings. Next is a category called “Pile’Ons,” with five choices, all served over chips or fries.
My favorite has got to be the fried chicken, queso, cheddar, tomato, jalapenos and sour cream. But I also admired the Flatlander. It’s a wonderful combination of crawfish etouffee, bacon, chicken, pulled pork, queso, cheddar, jalapenos and sour cream. There is also the offering of a free Uber ride to the hospital if you get this one!
Under the main offerings, there are more than a dozen choices. Most of them are classics, but with some lovely little twists added. I love a good fish and chips — and don’t often see them on a menu — and Irma’s famous fries look amazing. They are fries covered in crawfish and mushroom etouffee. There are also tacos, a wrap, wings and a double cheeseburger.
I ended up getting the burger, and it was delicious, juicy and moderately priced at $9.95. My partner, Taylor Griffin, got the Yardbird, nachos covered with grilled chicken, queso, cheddar, tomato sour cream and a side of jalapenos. It was excellent.
The Cannery is a fun and friendly place. There were lots of families, a scattering of kids and lots of old friends. Service is good and it’s a great place for a Sunday brunch with friends, or any time you are in the mood for good music.
