Dining out? Here’s our list of the 15 best new restaurants on the Mississippi Coast

The number of new restaurants that opened this year along the Mississippi Coast is truly remarkable.

Even in the uncertain times that we live in, culinary entrepreneurs continue to strike out on their own, more often than not, trying to make that lifelong dream of owning their own restaurant come true. As contrary as it might seem, the COVID-19 pandemic has apparently encouraged aspiring chefs to take a chance.

Julian Brunt, food critic for the Sun Herald, and senior editor Justin Mitchell, a self-proclaimed foodie, have created a list of best new restaurants that you should try in South Mississippi. Some of them opened this year, and others have been around for a bit longer but were recently discovered.

Julian Brunt’s picks:

Thorny Oyster, Bay St. Louis

Located inside the lovely Pearl Hotel, Thorny Oyster is a beautifully appointed restaurant on the Coast. The menu changes often, which is a sign that the chef is shopping for local and seasonal foods. It is no exaggeration to say that everything on the menu is good, but make sure to try the mussels and fries, deviled crabs, and my favorite, the bouillabaisse, one of the best things I have had to eat this year.

Jamaican food in Biloxi

There are two new Jamaican places on the Coast that are well worth a mention: Bonfire on Caillavet Street and CB’s Jamaican Jerk, both in Biloxi. Jamaican food is hearty and spicy, and don’t miss out on the jerked ribs. This food is hearty and filling, and if you go for lunch, you will not have to plan on supper.

The Shrimp Basket, Ocean Springs

It may be a chain, but this new seafood place offers a wide-ranging menu, attentive service and really good food. I loved the fried pickles, salty raw oysters, good po-boys and burgers. If you are really hungry, there are ten seafood baskets on the menu, too.

Sugar Pop Baking Company, Waveland

There are only a small handful of bakeries on the Coast, but the newest, Sugar Pop Baking Company in Waveland, is well worth the drive from anywhere in South Mississippi. Chef Renee Loranger opened her dream bakery after winning the Food Network Halloween Baking Challenge. This is a great place when your sweet tooth makes itself known, but come early, as many of the most popular items sell out early.

Skal Axe Throwing, Biloxi

Located in booming downtown Biloxi, the jacked-up bar food here is excellent. Try the cheesy garlic bread boat the next time you go.

Justin Mitchell’s picks

Italian Garden, Ocean Springs

Before Italian Garden opened up shop on Government Street, they were in an unassuming strip mall in Bay St. Louis, and I was devastated when they moved across the Coast. But this Bay St. Louis resident often makes the drive down U.S. 90. The food is authentic, the prices are affordable and you really shouldn’t skip dessert here. The manicotti and tortelline alla panna are both favorites.

Lady May, Ocean Springs

I feel like there just aren’t enough brunch spots on the Coast, and Lady May came in and filled a void left behind when the iconic Bayview Gourmet shut their doors for good. The menu is eclectic, and I don’t feel like I’m in Mississippi when I walk in the doors. Shop local and pick up gourmet groceries in the front before you leave. All of their boards, with different offerings such as pepper jelly, waffle toppings and classic charcuterie, are great for the table. And don’t get me started on the mac and cheese.

Murky Waters and The BBQ Depot, Bay St. Louis

The Bay has had a barbecue renaissance this year, with several new spots opening throughout the city. Murky Waters is a cult classic on the Coast, and I’ve yet to find better meat. The BBQ Depot in the up-and-coming Depot District is also delicious. Give it a try the next time you want to find something new.

The Scratch Kitchen, coming soon to Ocean Springs

One of the best food trucks on the Coast, the dessert nachos are famous, and they should be. I’m excited to dine in at their new restaurant space in downtown Ocean Springs.

Coffee Culture, Bay St. Louis

If you know me, you know I basically live in the Mockingbird Cafe. It’s one my favorite spots in the world. But, Coffee Culture is the newest coffee spot in the Bay, and I can’t say enough about how much I love their specialty drinks and homemade pastries. Get the coffee cake and say hello to Brooke Warley, barista extraordinaire, while you’re there.

Field’s Steak and Oyster Bar, Bay St. Louis

Sometimes, you just need meat and potatoes, and Field’s serves up delicious steak and scrumptious sides. I also love to see all of the craft cocktails that come from the bartenders. If you like champagne with dinner, try the Purple Rain cocktail the next time you’re there.

Basil’s Cafe, Long Beach

This is the place I take all of my friends. The Thai and Vietnamese food is simple and spectacular, and I always make sure to order at least three appetizers. The young servers who work there are always friendly and attentive, and I think Basil’s is a true hidden gem on the Coast.

VK Noodle House, Ocean Springs

VK is new to me, as I live on the opposite side of the Coast and recently had it for the first time while celebrating my friend Dylan’s birthday. Everyone at the table got something different, and my mind was blown at the colors, plating and freshness of the food. I got beef pad Thai, and it was unlike any I’ve had before. My friend DeRae’s chicken curry was fantastic as well. They also serve Vietnamese style po-boys with a Southern twist.
