Go for the java but stay for the grilled cheese and bagels at this MS Coast coffee shop
The District Coffee Company is in the middle of the busy entertainment district of Ocean Springs. Almost everything you want to see in this lovely and bustling city is within walking distance. But this is no ordinary coffee shop. In fact, it just may be one of the most unique coffee shops on the Coast.
The District Coffee Company is laid back, and I mean seriously so. Think of dining room comfortable, with couches and beanbags to sit on, all with tables, of course, so you can bring your laptop and work on your homework or that first novel. It’s also dark, so if you are bringing a book to read, you might want to consider sitting outside, where the light is better. My lunch guest, David Houston, and I were outside as we enjoyed the hustle and bustle of downtown Ocean Springs.
The menu is not large, but it is as creative a menu any coffee shop or café around.
Breakfast consists of pastries and snacks, chocolate chip, blueberry, and banana nut muffins, a few bagels, like the D’Bagle made with turkey, egg, Gouda cheese, spinach and bacon, or the salmon bagel, and Cali bagel, with turkey guac (a cute abbreviation for guacamole) and cream cheese.
One of the best sellers is the breakfast burrito, which I tried and enjoyed. It’s made with turkey, bacon, spinach, and cream cheese. Spinach and cream cheese loom large on this menu. We also tried the grilled cheese and found it cheesy, gooey and good, but, surprisingly, mayo was not an option.
Lunch is six sandwiches strong, with a club sandwich (the D’Club, predictably,) the D’Chicken, a Turks and Caicos made with turkey, Gouda cheese, honey mustard, and, you guessed it, spinach. There is a pesto chicken, the Havana, with bacon, Gouda, mustard, and pickles. I am sure spinach can be added if you like, and there is also a chicken quesadilla.
There are also five teas to choose from and nine coffees, like cold brew, cappuccino, and an espresso.
We found the District Coffee Company to be a delightfully laid-back place and I am sure we will visit again.
The music is smooth jazz, people are friendly, and the food really was good, creative, and seriously healthy. It is a great place to work on your laptop or hold a small business meeting in an environment where you do not have to compete with other noise to chat. It would also be a great place to have an afternoon beer on a laid-back kind of day.
