Coast Mexican restaurant, nursing home, 2 gas stations cited by health dept. for violations

Inspectors with Mississippi State Department of Health cited four food services in South Mississippi for critical violations in restaurant inspections over the last month.

They include:

Aztecas Restaurant & Cantina, 9400 U.S. 49, Gulfport, was inspected Dec. 7 for a permit renewal. It was cited for inadequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible, a repeat offense.

Corrected during the inspection were hands clean and properly washed, food contact surface cleaned and sanitized plus proper cold holding temperatures.

This is the first C at the restaurant since records are provided dating back to 2015.

Eva’s Place, at 258 Vestry Road, Perkinston, a personal care home with full food service, was inspected Nov. 4 for a permit renewal.

The kitchen was cited on three violations — no certified manager, sewage waste water not properly disposed and food contact surface cleaned and sanitized

Corrected during the inspection were three issues — adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible, food obtained from approved source and proper date marking and disposition.

A follow-up visit on Nov. 8 showed all violations were corrected.

Prior to this, the kitchen had only As dating back to 2014, except for one B in 2015.

Circle K Wiggins at 1911 South Azalea Drive was inspected Nov. 13 for a permit.

The inspector found no certified manager and no proper date marking and disposition, a repeat offense.

The kitchen got a B on Nov. 23 during a follow-up inspection when violations were corrected.

The food service area had a B in 2020.

Circle K Moss Point at 7100 Mississippi 63 was inspected Nov. 24 for a permit and was cited for no certified manager. The food counter got a B when the follow-up inspection on Dec. 8 showed the kitchen had a manager.

The Circle K had an A in 2020.

Many restaurants in South Mississippi were cited this year for not having managers, as companies posted help wanted signs but had difficulty hiring.

Restaurants and other food service establishments in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the health department inspection, “B” if violations are corrected during the inspection, and “C” if the violations are critical.

From Nov. 4 to Dec. 8, the Health Department inspected 458 restaurant and other food services in South Mississippi. The inspectors gave 378 As, or 83% of the total, 42 Bs and 4 Cs.
