3 MS Coast restaurants, school cafeteria cited by health department for violations
A school cafeteria and three restaurants in South Mississippi were cited in the last two-and-a-half weeks for health violations.
The Mississippi State Department of Heath reports these kitchens received a C for critical violations:
Bayou View Junior High, 212 43rd Street, Gulfport, had a scheduled inspection Tuesday and was given a C for having pets, bugs or rodents present.
Superintendent Glen East said the inspector found rodent droppings beneath the dishwasher, which he said is not in a food preparation area.
“We do have have a pest control company that services all our schools,” he said. The company is being notified, he said.
The report by the health department said inspector found rodent droppings in the dry storage area next to a trap and many droppings close to dish machine area between the wall and breakfast storage cabinet. Many small flies were found around the can opener in the dry storage room, the report said.
The rodent issue is a repeat violation, the report said, and directed personnel to look around the school, figure out where pests are coming in and repair any structural openings.
The can opener must be thoroughly cleaned along with the attached mount on the shelf and the floor below, the report said.
Corrected during the inspection were proper cold temperatures. Salads in the cooler were reaching 62 degrees, according to the report, while ambient air of the cooler was at 59 degrees.
“Salads were removed from cooler and placed in walk-in cooler,” the report said. “Please have cooler repaired or replaced. Do not use unless holding at 41 or below.”
This was the first C at the cafeteria dating back to 2010, according to records from the health department.
A follow-up inspection to check on the rodent issue and reach-in cooler will be made within 10 days, the health department said.
El Campesino, 21205 Mississippi 613, Moss Point, was inspected Monday and was cited for not having a certified manager and for not posting the last inspection permit. This is the first C dating back to 2011
Lakeview Catfish Restaurant at 9701 U.S. 90, Moss Point was inspected for a permit renewal on Oct. 19 and also was cited for not having a certified manage and for not posting the last inspection permit.
Corrected during the inspection were proper eating, tasting, drinking or tobacco use and food separated and protected.
This was the first C for the restaurant dating to 2020.
Dominos Pizza Store at 2529 U.S. 90, Gautier, was inspected Oct. 20 and was cited for not having a certified manager present. This is the first C dating back to 2017.
Restaurants and other food service establishments in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the health department inspection, “B” if violations are corrected during the inspection, and “C” if the violations are critical.
From Oct. 15 to Nov. 2, the Health Department inspected restaurant and other food services in South Mississippi and gave 191 As, 16 Bs and 4 Cs.
