Big portions of country classics cost less than $10 at this hidden gem in the Pass

Daddy’s has been around since 2011, but it is off the beaten path, so if you haven’t heard about it, it’s not much of a surprise.

I have been to the Pass countless times but never ventured down East North Street.

It has a welcoming atmosphere with a friendly staff, and you know most of the folks sitting at the well-spaced tables are regulars, but new faces are always welcome.

Daddy’s is well-worn, but in a comfortable way. The ceilings are high, and painted black, so it feels open. The walls are a bright roofing tin, a nice contract to the dark ceiling, so the overall effect is pleasant and spacious.

The menu is classic local hangout/dive bar, good and filling. There is a nice breakfast menu, which is available all day, excluding only the grits.

Just like the rest of the menu, breakfast is hearty at Daddy’s. You will find the breakfast plates you would expect, but the six Big Deal Breakfasts are, well, a big deal!

The rib-eye steak, country-style steak, pork chop, chicken breast, hamburger steak and the smoked sausage, all under $10 by the way, maker for a huge start of the day. But there are also omelets, breakfast sandwiches and pancakes and French toast.

The rest of the menu is made up of sandwiches, po-boys, burgers, a good handful of appetizers and a dinner menu. Bestsellers are the shrimp and roast beef po-boy, as expected, and the hamburger steak, served with a huge portion of mashed potatoes and gravy and a vegetable side.

There is no skimping of portions here! The fried mushrooms and fried green tomatoes are at the top of the list as well.

Don’t forget to look at the daily specials on the sign board as you walk in. On the day of my visit, the specials were a fried-green BLT with fries or gumbo and half a po-boy, both for $8.90.

I tried the fried-green tomatoes appetizer and found them to be as advertised. They were accompanied with a Delta-style Come Back sauce that was a good choice.

I also tried the hamburger steak, and took half of it home with me. The daily special of half an oyster po-boy and a bowl of gumbo was good and, of course, filling.

The true test of a kitchen is always found in how they prepare seafood. The oysters were good and not overcooked.

Daddy’s is a classic hangout in so many ways. When you are in the mood for a country-friendly place, lots of food, at very reasonable prices, this is the place for you.

If you are in the Pass and looking for lunch, dinner or breakfast, give this place a try!
