Waveland restaurant closes for cleaning after again failing health inspection

Two years ago, a customer found a bug in her soup at Sushilicious & Thai restaurant in Waveland, and now the restaurant has failed its annual permit inspection with many of the same critical violations.

Last week, the owners posted on Facebook the restaurant was closed and posted again Monday that it would reopen Tuesday.

“For everyone’s health and safety we conducted a full cleaning with sanitizing of the restaurant,” the post said.

The restaurant at 315 U.S. 90 was inspected by the Mississippi health department on July 30 for a permit renewal.

The inspector found five violations:

  • insects, rodents and/or animals present
  • food not in good condition, safe and unadulterated
  • food not separated and protected
  • food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized
  • Corrected during the inspection was adequate hand-washing facilities supplied and accessible

The violations were corrected when the inspector returned Monday following the cleaning. The restaurant then was rated B.

Many of the issues are the same violations that got the restaurant a C rating several other times. In May 2018, a customer posted three photos on social media of a small roach in her soup. One of the owners contacted the customer and told her pest control had come and the restaurant was clean. The customer removed the social media post.

A year ago, the restaurant received an A when inspected for the annual permit. It was given a B during a follow-up inspection in October, when corrected during the inspection were food not separated and protected, food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized, and improper date marking and disposition.

Restaurants and other food service establishments are rated A if they pass the health department inspection, B if violations are corrected during the inspection, and C if the violations are critical.
