Six Coast restaurants cited for health dept. violations, four for the same reason

Six restaurants and fast food establishments in South Mississippi were cited this month for critical violations, four of them for not having a certified manager when the inspectors from the State Department of Health visited.

This was the first C for violations at these restaurants for 5 to 10 years.

Restaurant owners and employees have posted on social media how Coast restaurants are understaffed because employees are concerned about returning to work during the coronavirus pandemic or are making more money staying at home and collecting the $600 a week in federal unemployment. That federal payment is scheduled to expire at the end of the month.

Restaurants with multiple violations are:

Hibachi Express, 9354 U.S. 49, Gulfport was inspected July 2. If was out of compliance for proper eating, tasting, drinking or tobacco use, a repeat offense. The restaurant also didn’t have the last inspection report posted. Corrected during inspection were improper hot and cold holding temperatures. This was the first C since 2012.

The inspector returned July 8 and the original issues were corrected along with food contact surface cleaned and sanitized and consumer advisory provided for raw or undercooked foods.

Keith’s Superstore, 10513 Mississippi 603, Waveland, was inspected July 8 and was cited for not having the food contact surface cleaned and sanitized and also for insects, rodents or animals present

It was the First C dating back to 2012. The kitchen area was inspected again July 16 and all issues were corrected

Restaurants cited for no manager are:

Kentucky Fried Chicken, 3957 Denny Ave., Pascagoula. This was the first C dating back to 2010.

Fast Trac, 4900 Chico St., Pascagoula. This was the first C since 2015.

Wendy’s, 3421 Denny Ave., Pascagoula. It was the restaurant’s first C dating back to 2012.

Pepe’s Bosque Mexican Grill, 10027 Central Ave., D’Iberville. The restaurant also was cited for improper cold holding temperatures. It was reinspected the following day and all the issues were corrected. This is the first C dating back to 2011.

Restaurants and other food service establishments are rated A if they pass the Health Department inspection, B if violations are corrected during the inspection, and C if the violations are critical.
