This Wiggins market has ‘delicious’ smoked salmon, tomato pie and daily lunch specials

Sometimes sushi and the salad bar just won’t make it.

Our bodies talk to us, if we are smart enough to listen, and sometimes that message is its time to fill up on meat and potatoes.

Miss Julie’s Market in Wiggins will fit that bill, with a menu that changes daily, and that will satisfy your cravings for hearty and delicious food.

Just because you crave hearty food, doesn’t mean you need to go to a gloomy dive. Miss Julie’s is about as far from that as you can get.

Expect good food, prepared with love, and just the right amount of class, in a bright and friendly atmosphere. The good folks at Miss Julies like to describe it as “Good food and a dose of goodness too.” You won’t be here long before you feel the vibe.

One of the bestsellers is house-made smoked salmon. When it’s done right, this is a delicious and very healthy dish.

Don’t be put off by the idea of smoked fish, smoked salmon is a delicacy. Be sure to give it a try!

Other top sellers include pulled pork, shrimp and grits, fried shrimp, smoked ribs and wings, and tomato pie (it’s an Italian American thing!).

There is also a daily special you might want to check out. Tuesday is red beans and rice, Wednesday is shrimp and grits, Thursday chicken and dumplings, Friday chicken and Andouille sausage gumbo, and Saturday is catfish.

The menu does change daily, so what I experienced will not be the same as on your visit, but this will give you and idea of what to expect. The Saturday I stopped by the menu was chicken salad, smoked chicken thighs and wings, fried crawfish and shrimp, and ribs. Sides included loaded potato casserole, five-cheese mac and cheese, tomato pie and collard greens.

The collard greens I saw simmering away in the kitchen were loaded with ham hocks and were thick enough to qualify as a stew. Yum!

Miss Julie’s is pretty good about posting the day’s menu on Facebook, so check it out before you go.

I can’t think of a better place to stop and feed the family when passing through Wiggins. To use one of my favorite references, it is a clean, well-lighted place, run by a family that is truly concerned with the well-being of every soul that walks in the door.

When you stop at Miss Julie’s, expect food like mamma used to make!
