Coast Mexican spot, pizza place and chain restaurant get C from health department
Three restaurants were cited by the Mississippi Health Department since Dec. 12, two of them for insects, rodents or animals present during the inspection.
The inspectors visited O’Charley’s at 10510 U.S. 49, Gulfport, three times in the last six weeks. Following a complaint, the inspectors gave the American-style restaurant a C on Nov. 20 for improper cold holding temperatures, a repeat offense.
The restaurant received a B on a follow-up inspection on Dec. 2 after the issue was corrected on the health department’s follow-up visit.
O’Charleys was inspected again on Dec. 31 after a complaint and was cited for insects, rodents or animals present.
Prior to this year, the restaurant had no C reports dating back to 2011.
Villa Pizza, 10000 Factory Blvd., Gulfport, was inspected Friday, Dec. 31 and was cited for insects, rodents or animals present. This was the restaurant’s first C since 2016. Villa Pizza is inside the food court at Gulfport Premium Outlets.
El Rancho III at 7300 Washington Ave., Ocean Springs, was inspected three times since a complaint in mid-October.
The Oct. 14 inspection in response to the complaint showed no issues, but the inspector found multiple infractions during a scheduled visit on Dec. 16. The restaurant was cited for not having a certified manager and not having a person in charge who demonstrates knowledge and performs duties.
Six other violations corrected during the inspection were:
- Hands cleaned and properly washed
- No bare hand contact with ready to eat foods
- No adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible
- Improper hot holding temperatures
- Improper date marking and disposition
- Toxic substance properly identified, stored and used.
The restaurant got a B when nine issues were corrected during a follow-up inspection on Dec. 27.
This was the first C for El Rancho III since 2015.
Restaurants and other food service establishments are rated A if they pass the Health Department inspection, B if violations are corrected during the inspection and C if the violations are critical.
