More than 1 million people ‘visit’ Gulfport for Christmas

More than 1.3 million viewers watched the premiere of “Christmas in Mississippi,” which was filmed in Gulfport and and aired on the Lifetime channel Dec. 9.

Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes had a part in the film and his office announced Monday that the “Extended Director’s Cut” of the movie now will be seen at 7 p.m. Thursday. Originally scheduled to air on Christmas Day, the director’s cut was moved up by Lifetime to achieve maximum viewers, the email from Hewes’ office said.

“Christmas in Mississippi” features the Harbor Lights Festival at Jones Park in Gulfport and stars Jana Kramer from “Country Crush,” Wes Brown from “We Are Marshall,” Faith Ford from “Hope & Faith, Barry Bostwick from “Cougar Town” and Richard Karn from “Home Improvement.”

The story follows a photographer who returns to her hometown of Gulfport five years after a disastrous hurricane. Hurricane Katrina, which hit Gulfport 12 years ago, wasn’t mentioned in the film.
