The Mermaid & The Phoenix will make its debut following the the Ocean Springs Carnival Association, which starts at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9.
The Mermaid & The Phoenix’s founders, Elizabeth Feder-Hosey and Heather Eason, have described the organization as “an all-women Mardi Gras parade for the purpose of celebrating the dynamic women of our community. Like mermaids who guide wayward sea men the women of our community are stalwart guides as business owners, community leaders, mothers, teachers, artists, and professionals. Like the Phoenix the women of our community face hardships, overcome obstacles, and rise from the ashes of defeat to fight a new day. This parade is meant to be a fun and classy way to celebrate being a modern woman on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.”
The group of women from across the Coast and from a wide spectrum of interests and careers will offer a variety of throws, but the prize catch is one of their decorated purses. And it’s not just the purse. Inside, each lucky recipient will find a small gift certificate from a local merchant or another small gift. Feder-Hosey and Eason see it as as way to encourage people to return to downtown, boosting the local economy.
A large float and several walk groups will represent The Mermaid & The Phoenix.
