Mardi Gras

Here’s your guide to Mardi Gras king cakes at Mississippi Coast casinos

Some of the most talented bakers and delicious king cakes in South Mississippi can be found at Coast casinos, and they are getting more creative.

Casinos in Biloxi, Gulfport, D’Iberville and Bay St. Louis are featuring Mardi Gras desserts and drinks right up until the last parade rolls on Feb. 21. Here are some of the best bets:

The Millionaire king cake at the Palace Casino bakery has to be one of the most decadent ever, swirled chocolate and caramel, smothered in pecans and filled with a choice of cream cheese or Bavarian cream. It’s one of 12 flavors in two sizes that can be found at Palace Cafe and Bakery. Order two days in advance if you want them to bake a millionaire, caramel apple or other king cake just for you.

The new executive pastry chef at Beau Rivage Resort and Casino is putting her own spin on king cake this carnival season. In addition to traditional cinnamon cream cheese and more extravagant cherry cream cheese or bananas Foster king cakes, Patti Kallinikos has created a creamy, lighter version with the Beau Rivage king cake cream puff.

These cream puffs sprinkled in Mardi Gras colors can be sampled at The Roasted Bean Feb. 1 -21 and at The Daquiri Shop on Fat Tuesday for $7. Both places are in the promenade. King cakes are sold at The Roasted Bean Feb. 1-21.

Harrah’s Gulf Coast brings one of the favorite king cakes in the region from La Louisiane Bakery in Harahan, Louisiana to Biloxi for Mardi Gras. They’re sold at at our Purple Zebra Daquiri Bar, says spokesman Nicholas Breaux Fujita.

Scarlet Pearl Casino’s pastry chef Allison Spicer lists some of the many kinds of king cake they make during carnival season — “chocolate, Bavarian cream, cinnamon with pecans, lemon, pineapple.” About 40 cakes are sold daily at Lounge Nocherie coffee shop and bakery daily, Spicer said — “Between 60 and 80 on weekends. We go through a lot of king cake,” she said.

Strawberry cream cheese is the most popular and for Valentine’s Day at Scarlet Pearl, they make king cake with hearts and sprinkles, she said. Occasionally during carnival she makes cupcakes with Mardi Gras themes and petit fours with Mardi Gras crowns, Spicer said, and plans to bake some Mardi Gras sugar cookies.

Golden Nugget Casino Biloxi makes king cake at their in-house bakery and sells them at Michael Patrick’s Sports Café and at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

“We offer favorite flavors, including strawberry cream cheese, cinnamon cream cheese and praline pecan,” said spokeswoman Kara Reese. “They’re available seven days a week all the way up to Fat Tuesday.”

Hollywood Casino Gulf Coast also makes king cakes in flavors like lemon, cinnamon, strawberry and raspberry with cream cheese and also Mardi Gras cupcakes sold at the Celebrity Grill. They’ll soon have king cake on the buffet for those who want just a slice.

Look for Mardi Gras donuts at Dunkin’ Donuts at Hard Rock Casino Biloxi for the next month. Sugar Factory celebrates with edible beads for Mardi Gras in the form of a Tie Dye Insane Milkshake and Banana Nutella Insane Milkshake that come with candy necklaces.

King cake cupcakes are featured during Mardi Gras at the Infusion Coffee Bar, open 24 hours a day at IP Casino Biloxi.

Those visiting Island View Casino will find Mardi Gras candies and desserts at the Sweet Stop in the north lobby and across the street at Coast Candymakers.

Treasure Bay Casino occasionally has king cake among the desserts on the buffet after diners get their fill of crab legs. Lobster is included with the buffet every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, making for an extra treat on Fat Tuesday before Lent begins.

Silver Slipper Casino also has crab all day on Mardi Gras Day from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. for $49.95.

The ultimate Mardi Gras indulgence is the “all-you-can-eat-all-day” buffet wristband at Beau Rivage. The resort is along the Biloxi parade route, and the unlimited access bracelet for $49.99 on Fat Tuesday lets people pop in for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Louisiana specialties on the buffet that day will be crawfish, boiled shrimp, seafood gumbo, bananas Foster — and king cake. The prime rib buffet that day without unlimited access Feb. 21 is $34.99 for adults and $19.99 for kids age 6-12.
