GULFPORT -- Chandeleur Brewing Co. celebrated its first year in business Saturday with a well-attended ChandyFest that paired local and regional restaurants and businesses for some fun and a chance to try new beers and exciting cuisine.
"I came here for the beer," said Joel Goetz. "My friend Scott Hixson made some beers with Chandeleur for the event and I wanted to try them. His blood orange sour beer is really good."
Chandeleur Brewing Co. debuted its newest beer, Big Smack Double IPA, at the event. The bold orange colored brew has a resinous hop character with a slight citrus edge, that is balanced but a robust and sweet malt backbone. This new beer clocks in with a 9.3 percent alcohol by volume.
The food vendors pulled out all the stops as well. Gulfport's Corks and Cleavers roasted a whole suckling pig, while Hot Tails restaurant from New Roads, La., hosted a crawfish eating competition. Gulfport's Murky Waters BBQ hosted a wing eating contest.

Music from Hadley Hill and Party at Moontower provided a friendly atmosphere suitable for children and adults. Children could play in a bouncy castle or play one of the many games available, such as bean bag toss or ring-on-a-string.
The festival brought people from all around.
"The beer here is really good, I live in New Orleans and this is my fifth time here," said Tony Green. "The staff here is real personable, Corey [Page, official purveyor of fun at Chandeleur Brewing Co.] is always a great time and it's just a nice family atmosphere."
