Celebrate Thanksgiving by donating time, toys

Get into the spirit of the holidays by giving back to local communities during the Coast's annual Thanksgiving meals and toy drives this week.

The Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen in Gulfport will serve its Thanksgiving lunch to the homeless and needy from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. The soup kitchen at 2615 19th St., will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and Friday. Donations/volunteer opportunities: FeedMySheepGulfport.org.

The Gulf Coast Public Safety Feed the Needy Program will begin delivering meals early on Thanksgiving Day from the Lyman Community Center in Gulfport. The deadline to reserve a meal was Nov. 18, but volunteers are still needed to help package and distribute the holiday meals along the Coast. Interested volunteers should report to 13472 U.S. 49, Gulfport at 8 a.m. Thursday.

The 30th annual free Thanksgiving dinner at the American Legion Hall, 645 Green Meadow Road in Bay St. Louis, will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday. The sit-down, restaurant-style dinner is open to all South Mississippi communities. Dine-in and takeout meals will be available, and deliveries will be made to the homebound in Bay St. Louis, Wavelqand and Hancock County. The Gulf Coast Rescue Mission will serve its annual Thanksgiving meal from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday at 2750 Mission Lane, Biloxi. Volunteers are welcome. Details: 388-3884 or 388-6364.

The fifth annual Feeding Our Community Thanksgiving Day meal at the Saucier Hurricane Shelter will be offered free of charge from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday. Volunteers and donations are welcome. Details: 669-7129 or 669-2060.

St. John's Episcopal Church also will host a community-wide meal at 2 p.m. Thursday at 705 Rayburn Ave., Ocean Springs.

On Sunday, the 31st annual ASGARD Toy Run and Charity Motorcycle Ride will roll out from Kapp's Hideaway in Kiln at 10 a.m., from the Gulfport Dragway at 11 a.m., from the Chevron Station on Mississippi 57 in Gautier at 11 a.m. and from the Home Depot on Cedar Lake Road in Biloxi at noon. The groups will each ride to Knights of Columbus, Water Street, Biloxi.

In order to participate, riders must contribute one new toy and/or a clothing item or donate $10. After collecting and delivering the donations, the Harley Shop on Cedar Lake Road in Biloxi will host an after party at 2 p.m. with food, drinks and live entertainment. Details: 392-8281.
